Petoskey is a beautiful and unusual stone. Unusual in every respect: in its history, biologists, origin.
These are fossilized corals from the genus Hexagonaria, which lived about 350 million years ago in the territory of the modern state of Michigan. Over the next tens of millions of years, the remains of their skeletons became part of the sedimentary rocks. As a result, a unique “mineral” appeared, resembling agate in its characteristics. During glaciations, the glacier "picked up" petrified corals and dragged them along. As a result, coral pebbles appeared - pellets, on the whitish, beige, pinkish or brownish surface of which a characteristic star pattern is noticeable. It is formed by radial septa - a kind of internal partitions, characteristic of the skeletons of madrepore corals. Such coral pebbles can be found on the shores among the sand dunes in the northwest of the Michigan Peninsula. It was called "petoskey stones" in honor of the leader of the Ottawa Indian tribe Petosega. In 1965, the petoskey became the official state stone of Michigan. Fossilized corals are used to make beautiful pendants and pendants. They can be bought in the area of the town of Petoskey (Michigan).
Interestingly, new pebbles and boulders appear on the surface of sand, loose sedimentary rocks and soil every year. They are pushed to the surface by the processes of seasonal weathering (soil water accumulated under the stones freezes under them in winter, increases in volume and gradually pushes the stones up). In the same way, in the north, in permafrost conditions, stones, building foundations and concrete piles are pushed to the surface of the earth.
In the fall of 2015, the largest block in the history of Petoskey stone mining was found. She weighed 42 kilograms. But the joy of the miners was short-lived. The block was confiscated by the Department of Natural Resources, as local laws prohibit mining boulders weighing more than 11 kilograms (25 pounds) on Michigan lands.
Where else are Petoska stones found?
The sheet glacier pulled the destroyed coral reefs over a long distance. In addition to Michigan, Petoskey stones are found in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, as well as in southern Canada. Similar stones have been found in the loose sedimentary rocks of England and in the northern regions of Asia.
